Upcycled Cabinet

Well, last fall my dad gave me this cabinet that he had in his garage for nearly 30 years. Not sure what I would do with it, but didn't want to see it get thrown out, I rescued it and gave it shelter in our basement. We just used it for storage.

Then I got a bug up my behind and decided to do something different with it. {I go through spurts where I feel claustrophobic in our little house on the hill and need to do something about it.} I had a bookcase I found at a garage sale a few years ago and decided that I would refinish the cabinet and then attach the bookcase to the top and have...{drum roll}... more storage!

Living in a garage for almost 30 years tends to take a toll on things, especially when they are used to store things like oil and miscellaneous car parts. So, needless to say, it was a little rough.

With a little elbow grease I was able to wash and sand the stains down enough they covered well. I put on a coat of Killz to keep the stains from bleeding through. The inside of the cabinet I painted a cheery yellow. {For some reason I am loving yellow lately.}

I had to take a couple weeks off working on it due to the weather, it got cold again. But I was able to finish and gave it a new home in our living room by our fireplace. I was able to get rid of a generic DVD cabinet and boat book shelf and still had enough extra to store some of Wyatt's puzzles, paints, and play-doh!

I don't know if you can tell by the picture, but yes, the book case is upside down. I did that on purpose. If I would have put the book case the right way, there wouldn't be enough space between the bottom shelf and the cabinet.

I am happy with how it turned out. Looks WAY better than before!
